That was followed by two of the coldest weeks I can remember in a long time, although now things are warming up a little bit.

It has been dryer than normal so far but that trend is changing lately. Already we’ve had a couple of good snow storms and we have snow in the forecast. Our reservoirs are doing well and we should be in good shape for next year if we have an average snow year.

Winter in Taos – Skiing, Galleries & Flyfishing
Taos, without a doubt, offers the best blend of things to do and see of any ski area in the Rockies. Our southern latitude is ideal for the flyfisher visiting Taos with folks who have other interests like skiing (and now snow-boarding), gallery hopping and attending pueblo celebrations.

You can be at the top of the world skiing in Taos Ski Valley powder one day and at the bottom of the Rio Grande Gorge fishing in the sun the next day! It’s the perfect family place because there’s something for everyone to do.

Culebra Creek – Winter Fly Fishing at its Best!!

If you haven’t fished the Culebra during the winter, you better try it this year! Midges hatch daily and some days fish actually come to the surface. Light tippets and tiny flies are the ticket at this time of the year and landing the scrappy bows and browns is challenging and rewarding. Let us show you how to catch these wary truchas.

Give us a call today or contact us online to book a trip on this blue ribbon trout stream and you’ll see why it has become, by far, our most popular fishery. Call (575-758-5653 or 1-866-502-1700) or visit (204 B Paseo del Pueblo Norte) Jack or Stephanie at The Tailwater Gallery & Fly Shop for latest flows and conditions.

Rio Grande Gorge and Lower Red River
The Rio Grande Gorge and the Red River both provide great winter flyfishing opportunities. Midges hatch virtually every day on the Rio Grande but the fish rarely rise to them except in the flats near Pilar after the light leaves the water or on overcast days. In the Gorge above and below the Red River and in the Red itself one can have excellent results throwing a weighted double nymph rig with a small (size 16) mayfly nymph like Van’s Rag Fly or a double hackle peacock plus an egg pattern or a medium size Copper John. Hi-sticking the deep pockets, holes and riffles can produce some nice cutbows and browns 12 to 20 inches.

Just yesterday I caught a couple of fat cutbows and two post-spawning browns between 16 and 18 inches in just a couple of hours on the Rio Grande above the Red River, and another four or five nice fish in the Red River. Observe caution as the trails in and out and along the rivers can be icy and slick. Do not wear felt soles, use lug soles for best traction. Call 1-866-502-1700 or go to www.thesolitaryangler.com to book a guided trip on the Rio Grande or Red River today. Limited booking space due to permit restrictions.

Solitary Angling Club Winter Special!!

15% Holiday Discount thru January 31st, 2011

I am offering great discounts on Annual and "Modified Annual Memberships!!"

Season – April 1st 2011 through March 31st 2012
Call me at 575-776-5585 or email me at van@thesolitaryangler.com for prices and an application to become a member of this exclusive angling club of flyfishing enthusiasts and start enjoying “quality flyfishing without the crowds”.

For a full color brochure and more information on the Solitary Angling Club go to our web site at www.thesolitaryangler.com and click on “the Solitary Angling Club.” Be sure to check out our blog there for latest news and announcements, including the TV broadcast of Van's Wyoming flyfishing feature later in January!

Call The Solitary Angler and Tailwater Gallery & Fly Shop in Taos at 575-758-5653 or 1-866-502-1700 for current conditions or to book a guided trip on The Solitary Angler's eleven private miles of Culebra Creek or the Rio Grande and Red River today.

We are located at 204 B Paseo del Pueblo Norte, one block north of the Plaza and across from Kit Carson Park in Taos, New Mexico. The fishing has been more consistent with the steady flows. The fish are spooky in the low clear water but they are feeding daily on baetis (blue-winged olive) size 16 to 20, midge larva and pupa size 18 to 22 and they will also take crane fly larva and micro eggs, and big browns can be seduced into hitting a large streamer.

The wild brown population is as good as ever and they are averaging 16 plus inches this year. Give us a call today or email us at fish@thesolitaryangler.com to book a trip on this blue ribbon trout stream and you’ll see why it has become, by far, our most popular fishery.
Call (575-758-5653 or 1-866-502-1700) or visit (204 B Paseo del Pueblo Norte) Jack or Stephanie at The Tailwater Gallery & Fly Shop for latest flows and conditions.

Cimarron River
Cimarron River- The river is at optmal flows (about 30cfs) for this time of the year. Fall baetis are hatching and will continue for the next few weeks. Look for sippers in the beaver ponds and slow pools. Expect evening midge hatches as well, especially in the beaver ponds. Pre-spawning browns are actively eating now and their brilliant color matches the beautifull fall foliage in Cimarron canyon.

The Holy Water is Truly Holy!

Now In The News: Van wins another soul for flyfishing

The Holy Water on the Cimarron River continues to improve and dry fly fishing this year has been spectacular and now the big browns are sipping on mayflies and midges, fattening up before beginning their annual fall mating ritual! Bows and browns are regularly reaching 16 to 18 inches and fishing should be great until they turn the water down for the winter, usually about early November. Give us a call today at 1-866-502-1700 to book this exclusive and private fishery!

Rio Grande Gorge – Autumn Gold
The Rio Grande Gorge is still our most famous location for the pursuit of the “wild” Autumn browns that inhabit its waters. While most anglers talk about going there, few ever actually pull it together to do what it takes to challenge the elusive creatures in this remote, rugged canyon. The best fishing is in the most difficult-to-get-to locations but the efforts are always rewarded by the beauty the “Wild River” beholds and sometimes by the cooperation of the trout. Blue-winged olives hatch heavily in the Gorge from now through late November and hoppers work well, usually through October. Streamers are always a good bet in the fall, especially in November when the browns are running.

Lower Red River

The Lower Red River is always great in the fall! The browns are getting bigger and more plentiful since the great flood of 2007. Various nymphs and flies work well, especially blue winged olives. Try a parachute BWO (baetis) size 16 to 18 and a bead head olive hares ear or Van’s rag fly size 14 to 18. Hoppers work well at times through October. Streamers and micro eggs work well through November for the resident and migratory (from the Rio Grande) spawning browns.

For info on these and all the great places we fish in NM, Colorado and Wyoming visit our web site for current posts by people fishing our waters.

Call The Solitary Angler and Tailwater Gallery & Fly Shop in Taos at 575-758-5653 or 1-866-502-1700 for current conditions or to book a guided trip on local public water (Cimarron, Rio Grande, Lower Red) or on The Solitary Angler's exclusive and private Cimarron Holy Water in New Mexico or eleven miles of Culebra Creek, Trophy Lakes, our new water on Trinchera Ranch (re-opens next June), or San Luis Creek, all in nearby southern Colorado.

We are located at 204 B Paseo del Pueblo Norte, one block north of the Plaza (right across from Kit Carson Park) in Taos, New Mexico. Please drop in next time you're in town. Open 9 to 5 seven days, sometimes six.

Wyoming Fishing Forecast for Fall 2010

by Van Beacham

Autumn is my favorite time of the year for fantastic flyfishing and big fish!
No Kidding!!

Fall in Wyoming
Big Trout – Big Fun – No Crowds – Book Today!!

Green River Below Fontenelle Dam
Spawning Browns – Spawning Kokanee – Egg-sucking Rainbows - Book Now!

I’m in Wyoming where we’ve had the nicest fall weather on record. Fishing on the Green River and tributaries has been fair to good for numbers of fish but the size of fish has been remarkable. The action is improving and we’ve had some great days. Some days are better and some are slower but we are consistently catching big browns and bows on dries nymphs and streamers.

The National Weather Service long-range forecast for this part of the country is for temps well above normal and precip well below, so sign up now for this great fishing season bonus.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to catch some really big fish. Call 575-776-5585 or email van@thesolitaryangler.com for information or to book a float trip today on this magnificent fishery.

Start experiencing “Quality Flyfishing Without the Crowds”.

Ham’s Fork - Big Browns and Bows on Dry Flies

The Ham’s Fork just outside of Kemmerer, Wyoming is still one of the best trout fisheries anywhere and this fall the dry fly fishing has been fabulous at times. The lower Ham’s Fork has been producing some really big browns like the one Solitary Angling Club member Steve Jackson caught on October 3rd. The 24 inch, 6 pound buck ate both his micro egg and his rag fly in one big bite. It took Steve 10 minutes to whip him into submission. Combine with a day on the Green and a day on Fontenelle Creek for an excellent trip you won’t soon forget! On September 30th Solitary Angling Club member Steve Jackson caught his largest rainbow ever on a hopper on upper Fontenelle Creek. Just the other day I caught a 23 inch brown and several other trout between 18 and 20 inches on a hopper on our private water on upper Fontenelle Creek. Lower Fontenelle Creek has been producing more browns and we expect some big ones, like the 25- inch brown that Al Kain caught on a hopper, over the next few weeks as they migrate up from Fontenelle Reservoir. Hoppers are still working but they are giving way to streamers, eggs and nymphs as we get later into fall.

Contact me personally at 575-776-5585 or van@thesolitaryangler.com for current conditions or to book a guided trip.

Maps for new Solitary Angling Club waters

van
i fished the "falls" with Spencer yest. Now available to Solitary Angler guided trip clients and members of the Solitary Angling Club, the ranch is less than an hour and a half from Taos (less time than it takes to get to Valle Vidal) and only 25 minutes from Culebra Creek.

Come fish over 30 miles of crystal clear streams teaming with wild trout. The hatches are in full swing at the ranch and fishing is spectacular! This week Western gray drakes are still hatching along with golden stones and blizzard caddis hatches in the evening, bringing every fish in Ute Creek to the surface. Come experience what I think is the best dry fly fishing for wild trout anywhere! The overwhelming majority of the fish here have NEVER been fished over, much less caught! Now you can be one of the few to ever fish some of the waters here. Combine with a two or three nights at Trinchera Lodge and a day on the Culebra for an experience You. Will. Never. Forget.

Western Gray Drake Hatch on Ute Creek, Trinchera Ranch

Lodging with all Meals at Trinchera Ranch Lodge

Book at least 2 days of guided fishing and 2 nights lodging before August 31st and save a whopping 20% on the guide fee and the per-angler-per-day rod fee on Trinchera Ranch!!

*Lodging at Trinchera Ranch

Warning!! We’re also entering our rainy season so flows will likely be more moderate for the next month or two. The fishing has been slow to fabulous depending on the flows and time of day using small, dark hare’s ears and pheasant tail nymphs, San Juan worms, crane fly larvae, stone fly nymphs and on the surface using golden stones, parachute Adams and ginger duns. We've had some great reports from anglers who have stayed on the water late enough to experience some blizzard caddis hatches. Streamers have also been working well lately, especially when the river is high and off-color. Look for great early morning trico hatches to start any time.

The wild brown population is as good as ever and they are averaging 16 inches this year. Give us a call today or email us at fish@thesolitaryangler.com to book a trip on this blue ribbon trout stream and you’ll see why it has become, by far, our most popular fishery.
Call (505-758-5653 or 1-866-502-1700) or visit (204 B Paseo del Pueblo Norte) Jack or Stephanie at The Tailwater Gallery & Fly Shop for latest flows and conditions.

Valle Vidal is Now Open and Fishing Great with Big Dries!

Rio Costilla in Costilla Park and Valle Vidal – Rio Costilla in Costilla Park and the Valle Vidal unit is ideal at this time of the year for nice cutbows and Rio Grande cuts. The flows remain a bit high due to releases from Costilla Reservoir for irrigators downstream but this is big bug season so you can catch fish on dries and dry-droppers if presented properly. Giant golden stoneflies are on and the fish love them. PMDs, gray drakes, gray duns and various caddis are hatching and will be continuing through the next month; hoppers will be coming on any day. It really helps to fish this beautiful stream with someone who knows the water, so call us to arrange a guided trip with all the right flies and a nice shore lunch - scenery and sound effects provided by Mother Nature at her best.

Solitary Angler Guided Trip - Rio Costilla

Cimarron River

Cimarron River – The river is at optimal flows, about 30 cfs. Mayflies galore have been hatching, and golden stone flies are in full swing and will continue for the next few weeks. Ginger (PMD), blue and olive duns, green and gray drakes and evening caddis have all been hatching, and hatches should be strong for the next month providing great dry fly fishing, especially early and late. If you can’t get them on the surface go deep with nymphs and wait for the evening caddis hatch when they will come to the top.

The "Holy Water" is Truly Holy!

The justly nicknamed "Holy Water" on the Cimarron River continues to improve. Fishing this year has been great, and now that they turned the river up it’s fantastic! Bows and browns are regularly reaching 16 to 18 inches. Already dry fly fishing has been superb during hatches and should be great for the next few months. Because it's private, thirty-fish days are typical now. Give us a call today at 1-866-502-1700 to book this exclusive private fishery!

Holy Water Cabins – The old rustic cabins located on the banks of the Holy Water are now available to clients and Members fishing there and elsewhere. Touch a whole bunch of fish, barbeque some meat, sit around the fire - thinking about the world you left behind is simply not possible.

Cabin on the Holy Water – Guide Required (except SAC members)
Give us a call today at 1-866-502-1700 to book this cabin and exclusive private fishery!

1 or 2 people per night …………………………………...…...$125.00

Each additional person…………………………………………$50.00

(SAC members receive a 10% discount)

For info on these and all the great places we fish in New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming, visit our web sight at www.thesolitaryangler.com and check out our new blog for current posts by people fishing our waters.

Call The Solitary Angler and Tailwater Gallery & Flyshop in Taos at 575-758-5653 or 1-866-502-1700 for current conditions or to book a guided trip on local public water or on The Solitary Angler's eleven private miles of Culebra Creek, the Cimarron Holy Water, or our Trophy Lakes, or our new waters on Trinchera Ranch and San Luis Creek in Colorado, or Wyoming's Fontenelle Creek.

We are located at 204 B Paseo del Pueblo Norte, one block north of the Plaza (right across from Kit Carson Park) in Taos, New Mexico. Please drop in next time you're in town. Open 9 to 5 seven days, sometimes six.

Fishing Forecast for Summer 2010

Last update June 24th 2010 by Van Beacham

Run-off is Finally Ending and Hatches are Starting!

After another great winter and a long and steady run-off, streams in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado have peaked and are ranging from fishable to perfect! Flows should be about normal throughout the season again this year. Fish populations and sizes are up on most streams this year since we’ve had average or better snow pack for the last seven years. Now the hatches start and we get to experience what we wait for all winter - dry fly fishing! For detailed information on all the fly fishing in New Mexico including equipment, flies, hatches, maps, techniques and more, order my book Flyfisher’s Guide to New Mexico at van@thesolitaryangler.com and I’ll send you a crisp, new, personalized, signed copy.

Culebra Creek – Hatches Are Just Starting!!

The Culebra’s flows have been fluctuating between slightly high and just below normal as farmers downstream have been calling for water due to the lack of rain lately. The fishing has been fair to good depending on the flows using small, dark hare’s ears and pheasant tail nymphs, San Juan worms, crane fly larvae, stone fly nymphs and occasionally on the surface using golden stones, parachute Adams and ginger duns. Streamers have also been working well lately, especially when the river is high and off-color. The biggest problem has been landing the hefty fish in the heavy currents.

Fishing on Culebra Creek is expected to improve now as the hatches improve over the next two weeks. Already, I’ve seen small hoppers on section 2A and 2B, and PMDs and golden stones are just starting up and down the river. Micro caddis and olive caddis are hatching at dusk. Rainbows, cutbows, brookies and browns are already taking PMDs, golden stones and caddis, both on top and underneath, and it will be getting better as the hatches take off.

Beat the Heat at Trinchera Ranch

(Available to Solitary Angling Club members and guided Solitary Angler clients)

Trinchera Ranch Lodge

Trinchera Ranch Water

Now is the time to fish all the high mountain streams on the 180,000-acre Trinchera Ranch and beat the heat of the lower rivers and streams. Streamers and damsel nymphs stripped deep are producing the best results.

The pike pond is coming on strong and we’ve had some clients catch some big ones lately using four to six inch long streamers. Contact us at fish@thesolitaryangler.com to book a trip you’ll never forget.

Our Trophy Ponds are available to Solitary Angling Club members without a guide, and to guided clients of The Solitary Angler Guide Service, 1-866-502-1700.

Rio Grande Gorge and Lower Tributaries

The Rio Grande and its tributaries are still ranging from slightly high to just right for great fishing. Fishing will improve greatly on the tribs in the next few weeks while the Rio will take a while to clear up. Look for hatches of mayflies, stoneflies and caddis on the tribs during the next month. My favorites include the upper Hondo and the Dixon Box. We’ll keep you posted as the conditions change or call the shop for the latest conditions.

Other Options

Rio Costilla in Costilla Park – The Rio Costilla in Costilla Park (not the Valle Vidal) is ideal at this time of the year for nice cutbows and Rio Grande cuts. The flows remain fairly high due to releases from Costilla Reservoir for irrigation downstream but this is big bug season so you can catch fish even on dries and dry-droppers if presented properly. Giant golden stoneflies will be starting to hatch any day and the fish love them. PMDs, gray drakes, gray duns and caddis will all be hatching during the next month.

Cimarron River - As expected, the Cimarron River is continuing to improve and the fish are averaging larger than they have in years and the number of wild browns is way up due to seven years in a row of above average moisture. They just turned the river up to optmal flows (about 30cfs); already ginger duns have been hatching and stone flies have begun and will continue to increase over the next few weeks. Based on the health of the river bottom we are expecting great hatches this year on the Cimarron. Ginger (PMDs), blue and olive duns, green and grey drakes and evening caddis will all be hatching during the next month providing great dry fly fishing all day long. In the first couple miles below the dam, shrimp are abundant and small, tan, orange or olive scuds bumped along the bottom can produce great results if you can’t get them to come to the surface.

The Holy Water is Truly Holy!

The "Holy Water", our exclusive tailwater on the Cimarron River, continues to improve. Fishing this year has been great and now that they've turned the river up it’s fantastic! Bows and browns are regularly reaching 16 to 18 inches. Already dry fly fishing has been superb during hatches and should be great for the next few months. Give us a call today at 1-866-502-1700 to book this exclusive private fishery!

Cabins on the Holy Water!

Holy Water Cabins - The old rustic cabins located on the banks of the Holy Water are now available to clients and Members fishing there and elsewhere.

Cabin on the “Holy Water” – Guide Required (except SAC members)

Give us a call today at 1-866-502-1700 to book this cabin and exclusive private fishery!

1 or 2 people per night …………………………………...…...$125.00

Each additional person…………………………………………$50.00

(SAC members receive a 10% discount)

For more info on these and all the great places we fish in New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming, visit our website at www.thesolitaryangler.com and watch this blog for current posts by people fishing our waters.

Call The Solitary Angler and Tailwater Gallery & Flyshop in Taos at 575-758-5653 or 1-866-502-1700 for current conditions or to book a guided trip on local public water or on The Solitary Angler's exclusive private waters: eleven miles of Culebra Creek, the Cimarron Holy Water, the Trophy Ponds, or our new water on Trinchera Ranch; also San Luis Creek near Poncha Pass and Fontenelle Creek in southwestern Wyoming.

We are located at 204 B Paseo del Pueblo Norte, one block north of the Plaza (right across from Kit Carson Park) in Taos, New Mexico. ear. then nothing for an hour and i put on a green czech nymph dropper and landed a 19" rainbow in the hole right above the parking waterfall.it ran UPSTREAM about 40-50yds and tried to get behind the big sawed off log, but i got it away before it broke me. sweet!

2 more browns (all were 14-15" jumpers) completed the day.there was one fish rising in the swirling scum at the The snow pack in the northern Rockies is less than 75% of normal so they won’t be raising the Green River below the dam very much this spring. This is one of those rare situations where we should have great spring and early summer fishing on the Green. Fishing has been great using small midge larva, San Juan worms and small nymphs. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to catch some really big fish. A very nice fish in demanding conditions. Low winter water will give way to more generous summer flows as San Luis Valley ranchers start calling for releases in early May.

Here's Joel's expression of what sounds like a pretty special memory: Attached photos are of a 23" (estimated) Rainbow I caught on Section 1(b) today. It is the second largest Rainbow I've caught on the Culebra. The water is quite low so when the fish took off downstream half his body was exposed. This inspired Rocket (my Chesapeake Bay Retriever) to want to "help". I landed the fish notwithstanding the unwanted assistance and, following a couple of quick photos, it was released. It took a #20 Zebra Midge tied with a poly wing to simulate an emerger.

The Solitary Angler Fishing Report / Forecast

The Solitary Angler Fishing Report / Forecast

Last update April 5th 2010 by Van Beacham

Visit Us on the Web for the Latest News

Spring Caddis, or Not?

Every year, Rio Grande fanatics like me anxiously await the annual spring caddis hatch with great anticipation. The vision is hard to get out of my mind! Billions of caddis in the air just before dusk as the last rays of sun leaves the water, retreating below the canyon wall, and suddenly every trout is veraciously feeding on the endless conveyer belt of caddis flies helplessly fluttering on the surface of the emerald green water. Those that have experienced it will never forget it and every year we hope it will be like it was that time we caught 30 trout over 12 inches on an elk hair caddis. Our flies were shredded by the time it got so late we couldn’t see anymore but the ravenous, gluttonous trout were still hitting it wet on every other cast so we just went by feel until we finally got so hungry we gave up. Sounds great doesn’t it? Unfortunately, those conditions usually exist only in years when we have less than 100% snow-pack in the Rio Grande Basin with very little low elevation snow-pack and/or a cool spring. The caddis will hatch but the river will most likely be too high and too muddy for effective dry fly fishing this year. We’re sitting at about 120% of average moisture basin-wide, and flows at Taos Junction Bridge are already double the normal flow. We keep getting more moisture followed by warm temperatures so it doesn’t look great for the caddis hatch this year.

Don’t worry! There are alternatives!!

Despite the high water in the Rio Grande and all the snow basin-wide, we do have great spring-time alternatives. From various freestone streams that run off differently, depending on their elevation and orientation (north or south-facing drainages), to several tailwaters (below dams) and of course, ponds and lakes that are just becoming fishable, there are great flyfishing opportunities during the spring season. In fact, some of the best fishing of the year happens starting now; you just have to know where to go. From New Mexico to Wyoming there are great angling opportunities to catch some very nice trout. Below are some of our favorites.

Rio Grande Gorge / Red River

Normally we would be talking about the great baetis hatches right now, followed by the spring caddis in the Rio Grande Gorge. However, above average snow-pack and spring flows are going to make those hatches a moot point for the flyfisher. Baiters using worms will do good, unfortunately! There is a chance to cash in on these hatches on the tributaries though. Try the Red River, the Rio Hondo or Rio Pueblo as they are still running clear as of today, but check flows to see if they start rising rapidly in the next week or two. Going higher up into the headwaters can usually result in finding clearer, more fishable water. Use medium-size nymphs, caddis larva and small streamers, especially if the water is off color. If it’s clear try an olive caddis on top with a caddis pupa dropper.

Pike on the Fly

Northern Pike are abundant in the Rio Grande and fly fishing for them is becoming more popular every year. While you can fish for them year-round, mid-winter through early spring (until run-off starts) can be the best time to fly fish for them. Large streamers of various types stripped through the slower, deeper water can produce some very nice pike. Try the Pilar area for easy access and great Pike habitat. With the high, murky water it may be tough this spring but try larger, darker streamers with reflective materials.

Culebra Creek

Our private water on Culebra Creek is the premeire fishery in the Taos area!!

If you've never fished our 11 miles of private water on Culebra Creek, then picture this: Miles and miles of exclusive, isolated, pristine tailwater in an emerald green valley rimmed by some of the highest mountains in Colorado and New Mexico. Big, clean fish lurking everywhere. Meander after meander of big holes, undercut banks and sparkling riffles. No people, cars, bikers, beer cans or salmon egg jars, no trees festooned with yards of monofilament and treble-hooked Christmas tree ornaments. Your river, your fish, your own piece of the Rocky Mountain West.

You're not dreaming; you're fishing the Culebra. Get on the phone and get into the picture. 575-758-5653 or 866-502-1700

Spring Time on Culebra Creek

We have so many sections (upper, middle and lower) on Culebra Creek that we always have sections that are fishing well and spring time is no exception. The upper three sections are low now and remain that way until they turn the river up, usually sometime in May. The middle three sections have more water and get some run-off but stay fairly optimal until they turn the river up. The lower sections fish well too but can get murky, especially in the afternoons as tributaries run off into the lower Culebra. Once the river goes up all the sections can be great depending on flow, but even in high water the Culebra stays fishable and produces some of the largest fish of the year as they gorge on cranefly and caddis larva and various mayfly nymphs. Once the river stabilizes, dry fly fishing can be great during the baetis hatches in April and May and the PMDs in May and June as well as small golden stone flies that start hatching in June.

---------

Give us a call today or email us at jack@thesolitaryangler.com to book a trip on this blue ribbon trout stream and you’ll see why it has become, by far, our most popular fishery. It is about a half hour from the ponds to San Luis Creek so it’s very easy to plan an extended trip that includes any combination of Culebra Creek, Trinchera Ranch, San Luis Creek and the Trophy Ponds.

Guide fees for Trophy Ponds
1 angler – per day - $350.00
2 anglers– per day - $400.00
3 anglers – per day - $450.00

Rod fees for Trophy Ponds - $125.00 per rod plus guide fee (Members of the SAC: No rod fees – Guide required first time only)

*Packages (based on 2 people minimum per guide)

2 day sampler – Fish the Trophy Ponds and any combination of San Luis Creek, Trinchera Ranch or Culebra Creek –
* $500.00 per person (Lodging booked separately)

3 day sampler – Fish the Trophy Ponds and any combination of San Luis Creek, Trinchera Ranch or Culebra Creek –
*$725.00 per person (Lodging booked separately)

Cimarron River

The Cimarron River is perhaps the best flyfishing stream in New Mexico during the spring months. The flows are regulated by the state at Eagle Nest Dam and they are rarely too high to fish the river effectively. Midges, baetis and PMDs are all important spring hatches on the river, but the upper four miles also has an abundance of scuds and a tan or orange scud size 14 to 18 can produce some nice trout.

The “Holy Water” on the Cimarron

The Solitary Angler has exclusive access to the first (and only) private ¾ of a mile section of the Cimarron River below Eagle Nest Dam. This piece of paradise is so special that we’ve dubbed it “The Holy Water” because it consistently produces more and larger fish than the public water. This is because it’s richer, has far less pressure and it’s regulated strictly as a catch and release flyfishing-only area. Last year bows and browns were regularly reaching 16 to 18 inches and fishing should be great for the next few months. Give us a call today at 1-866-502-1700 or email jack@thesolitaryangler.com to book this exclusive private fishery!

“Holy Water” Cabins and B&B- The old rustic cabins located on the banks of the “Holy Water” are now available to clients and Members fishing there and elsewhere. Meals are available upon request at the main house on the property. The snow pack in the northern Rockies is less than 75% of normal so they won’t be raising the Green River below the dam very much this spring. This is one of those rare situations where we should have great spring and early summer fishing on the Green. Fishing has been great using small midge larva, San Juan worms and small nymphs. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to catch some really big fish. Call 1-866-502-1700 or email van@thesolitaryangler.com for information or to book a float trip today on this magnificent fishery.

Start experiencing “quality flyfishing without the crowds.”

Call The Solitary Angler and Tailwater Gallery & Flyshop in Taos at 575-758-5653 or 1-866-502-1700 for current conditions or to book a guided trip on local public water or on The Solitary Angler's eleven private miles of Culebra Creek, on the Cimarron Holy Water, our Trophy Lakes or our new water on Trinchera Ranch, San Luis Creek and Fontenelle Creek.

At Tailwater Gallery & Flyshop you can purchase a wonderful piece of art - beautiful landscapes & figures, stunning fly fishing scenes and vibrant studies of our elusive quarry - plus all of your fly fishing equipment (flies & tippet to vests & waders, rods & reels and hats & shirts), and you can book a trip for your next great fly fishing adventure.
